Korcula, the return to island of reminisce

It was almost two years ago, when I spent my entire summer on this, many times referred to as the most beautiful Croatian island. Korčula has, in contrast with many others, the ability to stay green trough entire heath season, what made it lovable and adored ever since the times of ancient Greeks.

Found a Venetian lions by the town hall

Two years later, I was back on the land of wonderful flora, diverse nature, secret untouched beaches and their unique wine Grk. I was able to once more walk down the streets I strolled so many times, and reminisce over the sights that I was admiring every day.

View from the walls of the old town

Not much has changed. The old town remained as charming and warming as it has been from the day I've seen it for the first time.

The first time I've seen the old town of Korčula

My first experience was truly seeing the change of the seasons. I've arrived there at the end of March, when the whole island was still caught in the winter hibernation. So many stores and bars around were closed, but as the May was approaching, the social outdoor life started to wake up.

This time as well, walking down the promenade by the sea, I was able to see people setting up terraces of their cute little restaurants, and remembered how we were doing the same at the place where I used to work.

The flag over the entrance to the old town

I remember how lively the island was during the summer. With every place jammed with tourists, streets full of people and stands, hard to find place to park and even a place to stay. The village I worked in suddenly turned from a sleepy spot into social events area, it's population at least tripling while all the abandoned houses were filling with tourists. The cafes and small shops opened, people put their businesses outside, there were numerous of activities available all around, beaches were full of excited tourists.

Some of the summer perks

The top of the season, the top of the summer, me taking a week off to spend it with my family and returning back to the island right on the day of my birthday in late July, that we ended up celebrating on a yacht of an acquaintance I made that summer (kinda my dreams coming true).

Memory from my birthday celebration

I remember incredible hot days we were having in August, and then, finally, some days of rain, when the grass we were eagerly  watering the whole summer finally turned green. You could see the parking lot in the marina underneath our hotel slowly emptying and there were less and less car sparked every day, until you almost realised the season was over.

Sunset as seen from the main square outside of the old town

And so, with the end of October, I was gone as well. My days of early mornings always starting with fantastic view from top of the hill overlooking sea were over, my position of ''breakfast chef'' was replaced by my colleagues who were permanently living there.

One of the island's beauties

I managed to see some of them during my short visit there, and on my last night, we just spent it as one of those ''family'' evenings, gathering at friends place, grilling food and enjoying delicious island wine, combined with the silly life conversations. It felt like not even a week went by, as the island and it's inhabitants certainly got themselves a lasting position in my heart.
