Running round and chasing inspiration in Shoreditch
Before and after war known as one of the worst and poorest areas of central London, Shoreditch was infamous for crime and prostitution. After the blitz during WWII, it was quickly rebuild just to fulfil needs of people, without taking in consideration any aesthetics and urbanity. Yet, claiming a property there during these sad times would make you score a jackpot by today.
Ever since the 90's Shoreditch is turning into one of the London's most hip area's, one that is instead of high end stores and yuppies, covered with art, unique places, small shops and creative people from all over the world. From the underground place of creativity it blossomed into a region of comfortable gatherings, where everyone can feel accepted and find the corner they'd enjoy. From eccentric pubs inside the containers, street food stalls and chocolate shop of your dreams, to a classy hipster bars, it's almost impossible to leave empty handed.
Art is blossoming from every corner of this district. Most common form are certainly graffiti. From some amateur and cute ones to internationally known street artists, you can find variety of styles, some looking completely realistic and others as insane surrealism. They're enriching walls, buildings, passages, all around the main streets, but there are also some hidden corners and yards only true locals can show you.
Beside that you'll be accompanied by other little gems, such as painted tiles, statues situated on all kind of different locations, there are even old metro wagons on a roof, statue of a goat on top of transport boxes and Banksy's car, now placed inside the big glass display, as it's painted window was stolen several times.
The main locations to be are Brick's lane and Ely's yard, where you can find variety of shops, from large vintage second hand market, to small boutiques offering unique pieces. There are little places with big personality serving food and drinks, such as divine Dark Sugars Cocoa House on Brick's lane, or different food stalls and vans at Ely's yard, an open space with great relaxed atmosphere. The latest is also a place of several masterpieces, such as previously listed Banksy's pink car and money monster.
Whenever somebody would pay me a visit, I'd certainly take them to this quarter, and funnily enough, I'd always get lost and having troubles getting to the exact spots where I hoped to go.But getting lost is a way of finding around here. And it's worth visiting again and again, as a lot of artists are regularly repainting their walls with new masterpieces. So no wander place would always give you feeling of seeing it for the first time, but also instantly the comfort and acceptance of home.
Spending the whole day walking around and breathing in it's vibes certainly won't be a problem. You just need to equip yourself with a comfortable pair of shoes, such as women walking sandals, trendy lace up gladiator sandals or cute Socofy shoes that perfectly match with the area.
So put on your comfy shoes, prepare to get lost and set on an amazing adventure, as right there in the heart of London, behind the highest skyscrapers lies the area that didn't yet loose its genuineness.

Yes I have heard this neighborhood mentioned quite a bit on the British YouTubers I follow. It sounds great, but sad that as soon as a hood gets nice it is also totally unaffordable same here in cities like NY and Seattle...

I didn't know anything about this neighbourhood. I have never been to London but if I ever visit, I'll make sure to shop by this area. I love street art. The street art and graffiti you shared are beautiful. I love the arty vibe of this neighbourhood. Isn't it fantastic that it underwent such a transformation, starting as a troubled neighbourhood and evolving into an arty and trendy one! I love inspiring stories like that.
ReplyDeleteYou look great in all of these shots as well.

Thank you so much! There are several places like this around London actually. I used to live in a place around King's cross, which used to be just as bad, but is now one of the most passed areas, since it has two of the biggest train stations with international connections, and walkable distance from center, so I've been told owner really scored a jackpot by getting a building there.
DeleteThanks a lot :D
