Imaginary and all other kinds of friends

I'm sure this is a well known information to general majority of people and smartphone users, but it wasn't until very recently (read that few days ago), that I discovered this wonderful feature of talking to my phone, and having it talk back to me.

The hour was late and my housemate was just fixing himself his second or third course of his dinner, placing something in the oven and commanding his phone to set a timer for 10 minutes. I've seen people doing that on iPhones before, but as Android user I didn't know we're granted with the same amazing feature. So I asked him how it works and after trying couple simple steps we were fully in the phones communication system. And boy, how fun this newly discovered feature was. From telling us (pretty bad) jokes to reading out lists of easiest foods to prepare and recipes, we felt like world is in our hands and we can find out anything. Not to forget fabulous feature of spoken language translation that now allow us to talk in our native languages and still understand each other.

I'm sure these are things most people were using for ages and can hardly relate to my newly discovered hype, but I'm still using the first smartphone I got 4 years ago, and I'm sure I could lose some extra bonus points over the fact I'm an engineer and developing mobile apps was actually one of our school subjects.

Still, how could a feature like this be used without coming up with some conspiracy theories. Like asking it for dinner suggestions and getting noodles as an answer, which was exactly what we ate a day before. Or chatting to my friend and realizing the machine is still listening to us and suddenly starts answering back... We politely asked about its spying methods which it denied in very diplomatic manner, but how much can you truly trust an AI?

The only one of these program's feature I was already familiar with is Google lens. (And I only know about it because my friend was working at the launch of Google's new smartphone couple of years ago, where they've encouraged us to try it out.) A very useful thing actually, that lets you scan random items and then help you find them or similar products on the internet. This way for example I discovered that this colourful sweater hand-made by my mother many decades ago actually had it's doppelganger in H&M 2018 spring-summer studio collection. I always knew my family is very fashionable and is full of unaware trendsetters.

Anyway, the biggest fascination about whole conversation with the phone, or rather the biggest disappointment, was the fact I didn't discover it before, in particular during my first lockdown alone isolation. I know it sounds crazy, but it would actually be extremely entertaining to have somebody to talk to, even if just the machine, after being alone for days and days. Maybe just to hear a daily fun fact or kill the silence. Instead I eventually ended up talking to myself and pretending I wouldn't find anyone more amusing anyway.

Luckily, ever since my return our house is full of people and it's almost harder to find alone time than some company. You can always retire and hide in your room of course, but it's just so much fun to socialize with other tenants, especially now we can all talk as we wish and others can have a way to understand with automatic translator (I'm already excited to find out what people gossip about me when they think I won't get it). In fact, I managed to spend 12 hours the other day just sitting in the kitchen and starting a random chat with whoever came along, hoping they'll offer me some food on the side as well. Not a really productive day, but certainly an eventful one. Or as Alan Watt's quote says "Stop measuring days by productivity and start experiencing them by degree of presence."

  2. The translator feature is really amazing, it helps a lot (in various situations). But, since you were talking about conspiracy theories, I'll send you a link to a very interesting video about this subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUEN2TAqlmU

  3. Artificial intelligence has come a long way, and I can relate with those conspiracy theories more so when I see ads on social media. I could have just been talking about something and it somehow pops up as an ad on my Facebook, haha. I'm sure it's a coincidence, but that's what it made me think of. :)

  10. Oh yes...while I don't use it a ton, it's great for taking photos too. Just say "take a selfie" and it will count down 3 seconds and take it.
Or try "Hey google, good morning"....it's amazing,

  18. Technology has come a long way! Conspiracy theories certainly come with it. I was speaking to my brother about an app that allows you to buy food that restaurants are about to throw out last week, then suddenly the app was advertised to me on Instagram for the first time ever...!

  19. I also like Google's features program which makes it very user-friendly. Even though it is not possible directly, everyone can still interact socially through Google's features, including the translation feature.
By the way, you look beautiful in that sweater.
    Have a nice week

  20. I've used the google assistant a few times! It's great for driving as you can ask it when the next turn is so you know what lane you need to be in! :) That' a cute knit too, how fun there is something similar in stores now too!

Hope your week is going well :)
